FED WEEK Report - Tuesday
The second day of Federation Week brought another excellent day's racing for all fleets, with the south-westerly wind backing 20° to the south and easing to a force 3, enabling both Series 1 and 2 to sail a different course from Monday, and despite competitors suffering a drenching from a few rainy squalls earlier in the day whilst rigging their boats.
On Series 1 both The Flying Fifteens and RS200s proved too eager and suffered general recalls, responding to the discipline of the black flag and starting cleanly, second time around. All series 1 had a testing first beat from Pilsey Sands to the Winner Buoy, giving competitors plenty of tactical options. With the finish line close to the entrance of the harbour, all classes except the Fast Asymmetrics were shortened before the strong ebb tide reached full flow.
In Series 2 a number of the Laser class switched their entry to the Radial fleet with the threatened heavier winds forecast for later in the week. All classes started on time with no recalls, and the RS Fevas provided competitive racing throughout the fleet with Frances Peters and Claire Lasko, 825 (HISC ) taking a second 1st, and with Laura and Christine Hill 350,(HISC) just pipping James and Alex Leonard 456 (HISC) at the tail end.
In Series 3, both the Toppers, numbering 25, and the 31 Optimists enjoyed 2 races today, with Topper helms Jamie Small, Alastair Hales and Thomas Durham in a close fight with Shaun Mason 22714 (Hillhead SC) who holds the winning position overnight.
In the Optimists Ben Gratton yesterday's winner, abandoned the fleet for the RS Fevas, leaving Alex Mothersele 4669 (Emsworth Slipper SC) to storm home in the lead for both Race 2 and 3, with 2nd place being closely fought by Jess Lavery 2409 (Emsworth SC), Tim Gratton, 4621 (HISC), and Kathryn Harmer
5072, (HISC). At the tail end of the fleet a number of novices are learning rapidly to complete their courses more competently on each race.
In the Slow Handicap Mark and Adam Oakey Mirror 67264 (Portchester SC) are progressing well in their Mirror, with two other mirrors Jonathan Holmes and Joe Austen 46682 (Emsworth SlipperSC) and Elli and Jackie Lytton 49553 (Barn Cottage SC) in close pursuit. - Robert Macdonald.
