DAY 4 - Wind arrives at last for classic Fed’ Week Thursday
A strong 20 knot sea breeze established itself in good time for the afternoon’s racing, enabling all classes to start on time, with classic south westerly courses across the harbour for both Series 1 and 2.
Series 1 were given early choices with the start line by Thorney opening up early tactical options for the competitors, and confirmed as all fleets spread the length of the line Gill Browning in the Fifteens was the only one brave enough to try a port tack start, and executed it perfectly, and with obvious better form than earlier in the week, went on to record her first win.
The Medium Asymmetric were dominated by the 29ers who revelled in the extra breeze. The RS700s saw a different winner with Jerome Backer 884, (HISC) taking the gun. The RS400s had another exciting fight with the Notley Brothers again failing to hold their lead to the finish, allowing Tim Weeden 548 to confirm his dominance. In the Finns Graeme Macdonald managed to level the Series with son Mark, after a full three rounds, with all left to sail for on Friday.
In the Toppers, the race for first place continues between Chris O’Neill (Wembley), Chris West (DQSC) and Alex Thorsby, with Chris O’Neill taking race 6 and Chris West winning race 7.
On Series 2, Ian Porter has already secured the Wayfarer Class, and in the Solos Tony Catchpole secured a win, opening the series for tha last race. In the Slow handicap, the Mirrors are still dominating, with Mirror 49524, Simon and Elise Kings, winning both races and the Series today.
In the Optimists Harry Bowerman (HISC) has wrapped up the series with a day to spare winning race 6. Charlie Warren (ESSC) took race 7. James Cunnison (Emsworth) and Eilidh McINtyre (HISC) are also doing well. - Rob MacDonald, Thursday 10 Aug
