FED WEEK Report - Friday, Final
After two days with all but 3 of the 20 fleets held ashore by the strong winds, the 3 Race Officers were determined to ensure that the majority of the record 450 competing boats had their third race to complete a proper series. With the forecast showing the wind was to moderate and swing westerly Series 1 and 2 were postponed for an hour with Series 1 having a special course to keep them away from the shallow Winner Bank on a falling tide.
The 29er 872 was OCS in the Medium Asymmetric fleet, with Andrew Gold and Vicky Lewis (Emsworth Slipper SC) sailing their ISO to achieve first place for both the race and the week. The RS 200s had to be recalled with 1004 and 626 sadly being disqualified on the black flag restart. The reach across the Pilsey Sands from Channel to Thorney provided some of the closest racing for many classes, particularly in the RS 200s, who rounded the windward mark in close formation. The race was finally won by Andy Robertson 739, (Bowmoor SC), his 3rd win of the week. Mike Dawe in the Elites, with a new mast fitted overnight, similarly took the gun, and secured the series, one of very few to have the luxury of a discard, and Mark Wood in the Flying Fifteens secured a second 1st and taking the week from overnight leader, Gill Browning. National Champion Ed Grieg proved a worthy winner of the Finn fleet.
On Series 2 many competitors, obviously restless after 2 enforced lay days, were pushing the start line with several individual recalls including World Wayfarer Champion Ian Porter, who despite correcting his mistake, reached the windward mark first, and thereafter led the race to secure the Week. The Albacore, Roger Houston & Paddy Lampard (Mengeham Rythe SC) sailed hard in the Medium Handicap to secure the series from 420 Oliver Sloper and Smythe, (Itchenor SC) whilst The Laser Radials, Solos and RS Fevas all sailed shorter courses in some of the best conditions of the week.
On Series 3, David Humphrey took the Toppers out early to recover another postponed race before providing a further two races for all his classes as the wind eased. In the Optimists Tim Gratton's 4621
(HISC) 2 wins secured the series on a tie break from Alex Mothersele 4669, (Emsworth Slipper SC), and Jamie Small's 44528 (Langstone SC) consistent performance secured the series from Shaun Mason
22714 (Hill Head SC) in The Toppers. - Robert Macdonald - Friday 20th August 2004
