SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
HAYLING ISLAND SC PURSUIT RACE
1. Rules: The racing will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescriptions of the RYA, the rules of the appropriate class(es) and by these Sailing Instructions.
2. Communication with Competitors: Notices to competitors will be posted on the Official Notice Board situated on the North East wall next to the Snack Bar.
3. Changes in Sailing Instructions: will be posted at least 2 hours before the advertised starting time of the race or races concerned. Flying Flag 'L' ashore will indicate changes to the Sailing Instructions and the Notice of Race. When no further changes have been made Flag 'L' will be lowered after the start of the last race of that day.
4. Signals made Ashore: will be hoisted on halyards on the Race Box signals mast.
5. Starting Lines: The start will be either from a Committee Boat, or a Club line as follows -
5.1. East Line lies between the mast on the Race Box and North West Winner buoy.
5.2. North Line lies between the mast on the Race Box and North West Pilsey buoy.
5.3. South Line lies between the mast on the Race Box and Calvert buoy.
6. Starting Signals:
10 mins before the first start FLAG C will be flown.
5 mins before the first start FLAG P will be flown.
Both flags will be lowered at the first start. After the first class has started, the number of the next group of classes to start will be exhibited on the Race Box roof or the Committee Boat as appropriate. Competitors are advised to double-check their start against the displayed number to avoid disqualification. A sound signal may be made to indicate each subsequent start.
7 Recalls: This alters 29.2. If a boat is over the starting line at the starting signal, the race committee shall promptly display flag X with one sound signal. The flag shall be displayed until all those on the course side of the line have returned to the pre-start side of the start line or for 30 seconds, whichever is the shorter.
8 Finishing: The race will be shortened approximately 2 hours 33 minutes after the first start. All boats finishing within 30 minutes of the first boat home will be timed in. The finish line will be one of the following:
8.1. The finish line will be set as near as is practical on and at right angles to the line between the marks bounding the leg on which the leading yacht is sailing. It shall be the line between the blue flag on a Committee Boat also flying Flag "S" and the blue flag on another Committee Boat. These boats may not be anchored and may proceed back round the course whilst finishing yachts. At a mark of the course this finish line may be changed to between the blue flag on a Committee Boat and the mark by the other committee Boat lowering the flags and going off station.
8.2. The finish line will be between the mark that ends the leg on which the leading yacht is sailing and the blue flag on a Committee Boat also flying flag "S". After the finish time additional finish lines may be set up at any mark the lead boat has previously rounded; such finish lines will be between a Committee Boat flying a blue flag and a mark of the course. Boats that have not rounded the mark shall finish on this line.
9. Safety: Each competitor is required to Sign On, on the form displayed on the Official Notice Board, before going afloat. Each competitor must also Sign Off on the form displayed on the Official notice Board. This shall be done within 30 minutes of coming ashore after they have finished or retired from the race.
10. Protests: Must be made in writing, and lodged with the Club Office in accordance with RRS
61, within 30 minutes of finishing the race.
11. Scoring System: Boats shall be placed in the order in which they cross the finishing lines with boats which are further round the course taking higher places. In the event of a boat crossing more than one finishing line the first result recorded shall count.
