HISC Newsletter . . . what it's about, how to join and set-up problems

HISC has an electronic newsgroup to which members and others with an interest in the club may subscribe. The reason for setting up this newsgroup is to increase awareness of upcoming events (sailing and social), to inform of events that have happened and to inform about members in the news.

There is no intention to provide a general sailing news service. You are under no obligation to join. Group members may leave at any time using the method described on every newsgroup posting.

In terms of information content, two sorts of postings are envisaged:
  · Messages (news snippets or event publicity) as and when they arise
  · Regular newsletter

The service is hosted on Yahoo Groups. Many of you are likely to be familiar with Yahoo since it hosts a number of class newsgroups. Experience with the Yahoo service is that it is robust, has good security/privacy and does not intrude with advertising and is, of course, free.

To join (subscribe), send an e-mail from your preferred account to: HISC_General_News-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
(note that HISC, General and News are separated by an underscore ( _ ))

When you join (subscribe), you will receive an automated acknowledgement from Yahoo to which you _must_ 'Reply', and subsequently from the group Moderator.

Yahoo offers you a complicated, web-based option for the automated acknowledge; ignore it and just 'Reply' (Option 2)

Once you have joined, you can post messages by e-mailing to:

HISC_General_News@yahoogroups.com

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS - If your email ISP plays up, messages from this newsgroup may 'Bounce'. If Yahoo has enough trouble getting through to you, it will tag your e mail as 'hard bouncing' and send you a re-activation request. YOU must REPLY to the reactivation request or you will remain off the newsgroup. You can always subscribe again of course.

If you change email address, BEFORE you stop using your old one, send a message to: hisc_general_news-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

You then need to subscribe your new e mail address as if you were a new person to the group (Yahoo only understands e mail address, not real people).

Yahoo! Groups Links

To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HISC_General_News

To unsubscribe from the group, email to: HISC_General_News-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms

For its success, the group will rely on you, the members, to post information of interest. The service is for the whole club, so whether you are a cruising, racing or non-sailing member, please contribute.

Information Policy

Postings are to be factual. This is not a discussion/debating forum, but the web site is interested in hosting discussion material.
Postings may be news or announcements of an upcoming event.
Postings should be on one topic.
Information may usefully be under topic headings of:

      · People
      · Sailing
      · Social
      · Re-development

Postings should be short. Attachments to postings are not supported.
Lengthy material should be shown on the HISC web site and be referred to by newsgroup postings.
Any group member can post a message onto the newsgroup, and subject to moderator approval, this will be forwarded to all group members.
The moderator will approve all postings to ensure this information policy is adhered to.
