HISC Newsgroup . . . what it's about, how to join and set-up problems

Purpose - HISC’s newsgroup is to inform you, via e-mail, of:

As such it is complementary to the website. For its success, the newsgroup relies on you, the members, to post information of interest. The service is for the whole club; so whether you are a cruising, racing or non-sailing member, please contribute.

Newsgroup Membership - The Newsgroup is open to anyone to join: it is not exclusive to HISC members. Please be aware of that when using the newsgroup.

Moderation. The Newsgroup is ‘Moderated’. That means that each message posted is subject to checks by the moderators that it conforms to the policies described on this webpage. Moderators cannot check the accuracy of postings; authors must ensure accuracy. Moderators may remove users who repeatedly abuse its facilities. Moderators are club members doing this task voluntarily.

About the Newsgroup, How to Join, Post Messages or Leave

The service is hosted on Yahoo Groups and is free.

To join (subscribe) - Send any e-mail from your preferred account to:

HISC_General_News-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (note the underscores ( _ ))

When you join (subscribe), you will receive an automated acknowledgement from Yahoo to which you must 'Reply'. Note that Yahoo offers you as Option 1, a complicated, web-based option; ignore it and just 'Reply' using the Option 2 it offers.

Subsequently you will receive joining acknowledgement from the group Moderator. After that you will receive copy of all postings and can post a message yourself.

To Post a Message - Once you have joined, you can post a message by e-mailing it to:

HISC_General_News@yahoogroups.com

That message will be broadcast to all e-mail addresses subscribed to the newsgroup. Your e-mail address will be revealed. Please choose your words carefully.

To leave (unsubscribe) - Send any e-mail to:

HISC_General_News-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

from your same e-mail account that is subscribed to the newsgroup. (Yahoo only understands e-mail address, not real people).

Possible Problems

Bouncing - If your e-mail ISP plays up, messages from this newsgroup may 'Bounce'. If Yahoo has enough trouble getting through to you, it will tag your e-mail as 'hard bouncing' and send you a re-activation request. YOU must REPLY to the reactivation request or you will remain off the newsgroup until you do so.

If you change e-mail address, BEFORE you stop using your old one, please leave (unsubscribe) as described above. You then need to subscribe your new e-mail address as if you were a new person to the group (Yahoo only understands e-mail address, not real people).

If you wish to reply to a posting, kindly ensure that you reply directly to the author, not to the newsgroup posting address.

Information Policy

This newsgroup is not a discussion/debating forum.
The moderators will reject thinly veiled adverts for external events that are nothing to do with HISC. Attachments to postings are not supported. Postings are to be factual and relevant to HISC.
Postings may be news, announcements, about HISC, about the sailing activities of HISC people, about teams of HISC members attending events in and around Chichester Harbour.
Postings should be on one topic and should be short. Lengthy material, photos, etc should be referenced to a website hosting that material.
Any newsgroup member may post a message onto the newsgroup, and subject to moderator approval, this will be forwarded to all group members.
Moderators will approve/reject all postings to ensure this information policy is adhered to.
