Cruiser Racing at HISC - 2017

Hayling Island Sailing club, although best known for its dinghy racing activities, does promote racing in cruisers. The unrestricted waters of Hayling bay and the Eastern approaches to the Solent provide ideal racing waters for yachts.

HISC runs a Spring into Summer series of Thursday evening “Sundowner” races for members and Chichester Harbour Federated Club members. Visitors and beginners are welcome. The idea is for friendly but competitive races where the emphasis is on getting out on the water and having a go.

There are also three races over Summer Saturdays or Sundays, including a “Get Racing” day where beginners are welcome to come and have a go with help on hand. The season closes with Barts Bash, run by CCRC and the long standing Nab Cup & Sparkes Trophy.

Club events cater for all levels of racing. If your racing experience is limited try to recruit a couple of good dinghy sailors as crew to help you with tactics and sail setting - they will probably enjoy the experience. It is not necessary to strip the boat bare in order to race, as handicaps will assume a reasonable amount of cruising paraphernalia.

Inevitably, however, having a clear out of the unnecessary heavy clutter that accumulates over the years and keeping the bottom free of weed can only help make your boat more rewarding to sail at any time.

Sundowner Series - Thursday evenings 4 May to 3 August

This season the Sundowner series will be run over 14 weeks and split into two series, early (7) and late (7)

The races will be run under the RYA National Handicap for Cruisers scheme. The Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and entry form will be available on the HISC website prior to the first race.

See the NOR and SI Here

Races will start from the HISC East Line, which is from the clubhouse race box mast to NW Winner buoy and will use marks in the Bay from Eastoke out to West Pole and Eastern Bay.

If you live locally, the Thursday evening Sundowner Series makes for a relaxing interlude in the working week and is an ideal opportunity to take friends and colleagues out for a short race followed by supper and drink in the clubhouse.

All yachts whatever their size and however racy or not, are welcome to enter. The VPRS rating system will be used, please obtain a VPRS rating from the VPRS website

The HISC ferry service will be available before and after the race, but please leave plenty of time as the ferry gets busy and has to land on the beach.

It is possible that some yachts will be looking for extra crew, so it could well be worth coming down on Thursday evenings and hanging around expectantly around 18:00hrs on the off chance.

Regatta Cup Cruiser Race – Sunday 13 August

NOR & Sailing Instructions will be published prior to the event.

Bart’s Bash – Sunday 17 September

Bart’s Bash is run by CCRC and further details will be published prior to the event.

Nab Cup & Sparkes Trophy – Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 October

The Nab Cup and Sparkes Trophy weekend at the end of the season is another opportunity to hone your racing skills. Other than the Sundowner Series the other events are split into IRC and PY fleets and any yacht can enter the latter. Published PY numbers may be adjusted and will be given to yachts at HISC discretion with the aim of achieving fair, close and enjoyable racing for the competitors.

Swinging moorings are usually available for visiting yachts, with a launch service available. Alternatively the adjacent Sparkes Marina is a short walk.

The NOR & Sailing Instructions will be available at least one month prior to the event.
