Optimist at HISC

Oppie training

Welcome to the Optimist Section of HISC Website

HISC Optimists are alive and well and if anybody wants information or input on the 2014 HISC Opi Season then please get in touch with me by email or at the club. The new season is fast approaching so I felt it would be timely to mention how our plans are developing for 2014.

Update March 2014

After a great Winter of training with up to 27 Optimists from HISC out sailing on a regular basis we will soon be seeing warmer weather and looking at racing and coaching for the summer.

So what exactly is there to do at HISC ?

There is so much Optimist sailing on offer at HISC that it is hard to know where to start.

Racing

For those in the Winter training we want to encourage you to join the club racing where we should now have a critical mass to get some good quality racing.

There is a full calendar available here  (Note the Pennant weekends are a great mini series with prizes on the Sunday).

Racing is every Sunday from April with some Saturdays / Bank Holidays plus Youth Race week and a few HISC regatta's - typically briefing 10 am - race 11 am.

All we need to do is get a critical mass to the start line and bingo.

Coaching

We are planning 4 Saturdays coaching but are still looking for RIBs (if you can source a RIB for any of these dates please get in touch ASAP - RIB owners get a guaranteed place)

Save the date but don't book yet.. more details to follow;

A couple of Olympic squad sailors (former HISC Oppy sailors) are already signed up to coach and places will be limited.

3rd May, 14th June, 21st June, 5th July

Also a date in early September likely as a warm up for the zone qualifiers.

We would prefer not to run training on a Sunday so we don't impact the involvement in club racing.

Other coaching

From beginner to racer Youth Training Week (in May half term) is excellent and entry for this opens at 10 am 24 March (via email) and sells out fast.

Those at top end zone squad or Dev squad might want to grab a Feva and try that as an alternative but the coaching should cover most abilities.

Details here for youth-training-week

*** Warning you need to email details promptly as this week does sell out quick ***

For those learning to sail and building racing skills the RYA courses below over eight weekends are ideal. Early booking is also advised.

Youth Supervised Sailing

Every Saturday from 7 June and from 1 pm - 4 pm the Marine Team will be out on a rescue boat to help coach/help the sailors .. aimed at the learning to race and learning to sail standard but if a few of you want to go and do some racing, team racing, have fun they will be there and set a triangle course for you to go and play. This resource is ultimately about having rescue cover for you to go and play and parents are welcome to jump on a RIB and help out.
